Harry Caray’s historic landmark building was once owned by the family of Louis Caravetta, in-laws of Frank Nitti—well known enforcer of the Capone gang. The fourth floor served as an apartment for Nitti from early 1939 until he took his own life in 1943. The apartment offered a view of the nearby courthouse building, making it a convenient hideout for Nitti. Frank Nitti’s Vault, located in the basement level of Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse in Chicago features many artifacts uncovered in the building, including a phonebook containing contact information for several reputed Chicago gangsters from the 40’s and 50’s, a three-door safe, tunnels and secret rooms as well as numerous original newspaper articles and photographs documenting the activities and crimes of Chicago gangsters during the Capone era. The Vault can be viewed by guests at no cost during regular restaurant hours.
